Sophomore Tyishea McWhorter of Bremerton made several moves upward in the latest track and field stands for Westsound high school athletes. McWhorter took over the lead in the 200 with a time of 25.48 at the Olympic League Championships held May 5.

McWhorter also ran a 1:00.98 in the OL Championships and is now just a twitch behind the 400 leader, Mya King of Central Kitsap who has run 1:00.82. McWhorter also is third in the 100 at 12.57.

Nolan Van Amen, senior at South Kitsap, stretched his school record in the shot put out another foot when he crossed over the 60-foot barrier May 5 at home against Central Kitsap with a toss of 60-10.5. He broke the former school record of 59-04.25 held by Gene Daunais since 1970 last year and is now in second place among state throwers this year. He sits behind Dillon Lionello, a senior at Mt. Spokane, who has thrown the shot 61.02.25.

Van Amen, who is headed to the University of Pennsylvania this fall to start his college career, continues to lead the state in the discus with his school record toss of 179-11.

South Kitsap sophomore Emily Riehl is just one inch from the state lead in the high jump. She has gone five-feet, five inches, which is just an inch and a half from the school record of 5-06.5. that was set in 1979 by Lynn Picinich.
