This is a photo from about a 100 years ago of Lane C Dowell (40) when he played on a Hoquiam basketball team that over two years went 62-3, suffering one of its losses to the Wishkah town team that was led by the Moodenbaugh brothers and Dave Busz and Don Entes. Back row, left to right, in the photo is Dowell, Steve Tucker, who played basketball at Whitworth, George Asan, who played basketball at Western Washington and coached basketball at Hoquiam (he had a tryout with the San Diego Rockets), Mike Cordrey (who also played basketball at Whitworth). Front row, left to right, Ron Tom, Dave Wayman (Hoquiam all-around athlete, Frankie Rightmire, Hoquiam player and coach and a retired Moss Lake teacher who is deceased, Jack Curtwright, former Hoquiam teacher and coach, and Harry Leon, who had a tryout with the Detroit Lions after playing football at Western Washington.
Lane and Deanna Dowell sent this picture to David Sandstrom, who is the recipient of their 2013 Dowell Family Scholarship. Sandstrom’s grandfather is Wayman. Lane Dowell is a retired teacher and coach from Bremerton High School. He also coached football and track and field in the West Sound area, and is a certified national and international track and field official.
