The Olympic Trojans track and field 800 relay team of Adrianna Marin, Morgan McCorkle, Danielle Rose Monzon and Hanna Troy put on quite a show May 27 at the state class A championships at Mount Tahoma High School.

That foursome not only won the state 800 relay championship, but established a new all-time Westsound record for the event with their time of 1:43.23. The old mark of 1:43.76 was held by a 2013 Central Kitsap team.

Olympic also finished second in the 400 relay with a Westsound best time this season of 49.18 (just missing the all-time Westsound record of 48.49 held by a 2013 North Kitsap team) to help the Trojans to 35 points, good for a tie for seventh in the team standings. That quartet included Stephanie Barr, Aalysia Mitchell and McCorkle and Monzon.

Troy, only a sophomore, had a big meet. She took second in the long jump with a Westsound season best of 17 feet, three inches and placed fourth in the 100 (12.32) along with anchoring the record-breaking 800 relay squad. She also had the best 100 time in Westsound this year of 12.27.

Speaking of having big meets, Port Townsend senior Seren Dances was amazing. He nearly carried Port Townsend to the class A state track and field championships over the weekend at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. In the end, though, private Seattle school King’s pulled away to win the state title and Port Townsend settled for third place behind King’s and Deer Park..

Dances won three titles and placed second in a fourth. He swept the hurdles, winning the 110s in 15.42 and the 300s in 39.30, which was the best time in Westsound this high school track and field season. He also had the Westsound best time in the 110s with a clocking of 15.00.

The third state championship for Dances came in the long jump where he went 22 feet, nine inches. That was short of his personal best this season of 23-01.

Dances completed his remarkable day by taking second in the triple jump with a best of 44-09.75. Ryan Slack of Zillah won it with a personal best 46-07.5.

If you are keeping score, Dances scored 38 of PT’s 41 points. The Port Townsend 400 relay finished sixth in a time of 44.44, the fourth best time in Westsound this season to grab the other three PT points. That all-senior relay team consisted of Kyle Blankenship, Gerry Coker, Berkley Hill, and Erik Pokorny.

Kingston junior James Dillow foreshadowed what he may be next track and field season when he claimed sixth place in the state 2A 100 with a season best 22.46 and seventh in the 400 with another PR of 50.76.

South Kitsap’s Nolan Van Amen failed to win his fourth state discus, finishing second with a toss of 171-02, but did win the state shot put title with a school record and personal best throw of 61-02.25.  It’s the second shot put championship for Van Amen, a senior. He won his first one as a sophomore. Van Amen finished his brilliant track and field high school career with five state championships.

Here are the state championships in all classifications – Boys: 4A, Mead; 3A, Mt. Spokane; 2A, tie, Ridgefield and Cheney, 1A, King’s, 2B, Northwest Christian, 1B, Mount Vernon Christian. Girls: 4A, Tahoma, 3A, Garfield, 2A, Sehome, 1A, Lakeside, 2B, Northwest Christian, 1B, Oaksdale.

South Kitsap’s girls finished in a tie for 38th in 4A and Central Kitsap’s girls placed 13th and Bainbridge 47th in 3A. In 2A girls, Olympic was 7th, Bremerton tied for 23rd, North Kitsap and North Mason tied for 26th and Port Angeles tied for 31st.

South Kitsap was 13th in boys 4A, Central Kitsap and Bainbridge tied for 11th in 3A, North Kitsap tied for 20th, Olympic tied for 23rd, Kingston tied for 31st, Bremerton was 44th.
