HUDSON KEFFER

I know that kids today have better training methods and have more people helping them train, but some of the early-season track and field marks are ridiculous. In class A there is a kid from Eatonville, Justin Kaelin that already is touching up against 60 feet in the shot put with a state-leading toss of 59-05.5, and has spun the discus a class 1A 165-04. Deer Park’s Aaron Obert is breathing down Kaelin’s neck in class 1A with a discus mark of 165-0.

DeJuan Frye of River Ridge has already gone 48.82 in the 400, which is an imposing run for this early. Garrett Rouser of Kingston has run it in 50.88, best among the Olympic League runners.

Then there are the javelin throwers. The state is being led by West Sound athletes. Central Kitsap senior Hudson Keffer has the nation’s best throw at 210 feet, which is also a school and West Sound record with the current javelin (the all-time West Sound record with the old javelin is held by the late Tom Tennis, who in 1972 threw the spear 225 feet, two inches.

South Kitsap senior Cole Sunkel tops the 4A state in the javelin at 192 feet and is second to Keffer in all school classifications. Sunkel’s teammate Shannon Laupola is third in the 4A state for the girls at 125-05 and Central Kitsap junior Starr Rodenhurst tops the 3A state and is fourth overall in the state with a toss of 132-05.

Two area seniors, Mason Villarma of SK and CK’s Cameron Carroll are third and fourth overall in the state in the 800 with respective times of 1:56.78 and 1:57.72. Villarma is ninth overall in the state in the 1600 with a time of 4:21.02 and Carroll, who has the fifth-best 3A time, is right on Villarma’s heels with a time of 4:21.55.

Villarma’s rise this year in the 800 and 1600 is remarkable because he missed most of last season with an injury. His bounce-back may be the local track and field story of the season.

Cole Christman of Wenatchee has already run the 1600 in 4:09.94. Christman runs the second leg of the Wenatchee 1600 relay that tops the state with a time of 3:24.50. Wenatchee is a 4A school.

South Kitsap’s 1600 relay is fourth in the state at 2:26.86. Villarma is the second leg of that relay team.

Central Kitsap’s 1600 relay has run a 3:29.76 time, which leads 3A state and is 10th overall.

South Kitsap’s sophomore throws phenom, Nolan Van Amen, is third in the state in the discus with a throw of 171-03 and is tied for sixth in the state in the shot put with a toss of 53-01. Van Amen is second in 4A in both the shot put and discus to Union junior Bailey King, who has a 54-05 throw in  the shot put and a 171-04 in the discus.

North Kitsap senior Zachary Whittaker tops the state in the triple jump at 45-09.75 and Olympic senior Keshun McGee is fourth in the state with his jump of 44-11.75.

Bainbridge’s girl’s 1600 relay team of  Lindsay Wienkers, Mikelle Ackerley, Aerin Amore, and Natalie Ackerley) have rukn the state’s 10th-best time of  4:10.17. Their time is fourth-best among 3A schools.

Central Kitsap junior Starr Rodenhurst has the best 3A javelin throw and is fourth overall in the state with her toss of 132-05.

North Kitsap’s Rebecca Darrow, a junior, leads 3A state and is tied for sixth overall with a high jump of 5-04.
