MASON VILLARMA

A 42-year old South Kitsap track and field record fell Thursday when senior Mason Villarma took second in the 1600 during the Narrows League 4A meet held in Shelton.

Villarma ran a 4:12.44 which beats the 4:16.7 mile mark set by Lou Boudreau in 1973. Boudreau’s mile time converted to meters would be 4:14.3

The run by Villarma is still short of the all-time West Sound record of 4:08.6 set by Central Kitsap’s Shane Moskowitz in 2010.

Villarma ran the first 800 of the race in 2:05 and closed on the last lap in 63 seconds. He was beaten by Bellarmine Prep junior Jack Yearian, who ran the race in 4:10.78.

“He was very happy,” said SK coach Paul Zimmer. “He’s on cloud nine. He can’t believe it.”

Zimmer believes Villarma, who missed most of last season with an injury, still has a lot left in the tank.  We haven’t backed off in workouts. We went hard this week.”

Villarma is scheduled to run the 800 on Saturday as the league meet wraps up. The top five in each event other than relays advance to next week’s West Central 4A District meet at French Field at Kent Meridian High School.

That was the good news for the SK Wolves. There was bad news. The school’s 400 relay team took a baton out of their zone and was disqualified. The Wolves’ team of Troy Delgado, Chandler Van Amen, Izaijha Byrd and Brayden Maynard has the West Sound best record this year of 43.15 and Zimmer felt the team had a good chance of running into the 42-second range.

In other results, Central Kitsap’s Cameron Carroll became a double winner in the 3A Narrows League meet. He won the 400 in 50.07 and the 1600 in 4:23.31.

Super SK sophomore Nolan Van Amen won the shot put (56-05), teammate Cole Sunkel won the javelin (187-10) and another teammate, Albert MacArthur won the long jump (22-01). Hudson Keffer of CK, who is the national leader in the javelin, won the 3A javelin with a toss of 190-07.

On the girl’s side, CK’s Keyera Gaulden won the 100 (12.93), teammate Molly Fischer took the 1600 (5:16.62) and the CK 400 relay won (50.20).
